Sound Monkie Designs is the brainchild of ien DeNio. An NYC based, trans non-binary Sound Designer working on Broadway and beyond. The child of a military mother and a mechanic father, ien grew up living all over the world. In middle school, they decided, against the will of the conductor, to begin studying the oboe - a passion that took them through high school to college at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY. Shortly into their freshman year they got into a fight with Mozart - yet again - and ran screaming from the music building to the theater building. They stayed for the remainder of their tenure at SLC, studying all types of technical theater with a supreme focus on sound. In their junior year at SLC, they did their first professional shows and began working in New York’s Off-Off-Broadway scene. Now, 15 years and 125+ shows later, ien works steadily as an Associate Off-Broadway. They have worked on Broadway as well, while maintaining a design presence both Off-Off- and Off-Broadway. A composer and designer, they much enjoy the collaborative process - no matter their position - and thrive in the fast-paced world that is Theater Sound.
